Getting Help From Solicitors or Trustee Companies

MS Australia can provide a current list of solicitors who can help you with writing your Will. They have specific skills and knowledge to help people clearly express their wishes in a valid Will. They can also assist to amend your Will (called a codicil) or draw up a new one if you wish for a substantial change.

Several trustee companies also provide similar resources. A list of various trustee companies may also be obtained if this is your preferred option.

You can make a Will without any legal help, but you will need to know all the legal requirements to make a valid Will and the correct wording to minimise the risk of a challenge. A do-it-yourself Will Kit is not recommended.

Solicitors and trustee companies can also give advice on minimising tax depending on the way your Will is arranged. This is especially important when you are considering making a bequest to a not-for-profit organisation. The problem of keeping your Will in a safe place is also solved.

Tip: See your solicitor properly prepared with:

  • Your full personal details
  • A complete list of all your assets
  • Your choice of executor
  • Your beneficiaries and what they receive
  • The bequest wording for MS Australia and its address
  • Your decision to nominate an attorney (financial or medical)
  • A Will Check List
